The American water spaniel is a, breed of sporting dog originating in the United States in the late 1800s, bred to retrieve on land or to leap into the water from a boat to retrieve birds. Its ancestors are unknown, but the breed likely was developed from other spaniels and the Irish Water Spaniel or the curly-coated retriever, which it resembles.

Features of American Water Spaniel
As befits a sporting dog, it is muscular and active, with a broad skull and hanging ears. It is medium sized, standing 15 to 18 inches (38 to 45 cm) and weighing 25 to 45 pounds (11 to 20 kg). The liver-coloured, brown, or chocolate coat is curly or marcelled (uniformly waved) everywhere except on the face; some dogs have a little white on the chest and toes.
American Water Spaniel is an intelligent dog and eager to please. They are very easy to train by using positive and gentle commands, rather than strict or harsh discipline, as this can cause distrust.
Temperament / Behavior
The American Water Spaniel is a good-natured and friendly dog, eager to please. Good entertainer for kids. It can play all day long, and at the end of the day, curl up on your lap for extra cuddles. It will partake in all kinds of activities, on land or in water. This breed loves to be around people and will want to follow you around no matter where you go.
The American Water Spaniel has an average lifespan of 13 to 15 years.
As this is a hunting breed, it needs plenty of exercise such as running, hunting, swimming, hiking and bike rides in apartments. Lack of space to run around, this dog may become destructive.
